ROUND 5: TURNER MOTORSPORT BMW HEADS TO WATKINS GLEN FOR SAHLENS SIX HOURS
Amesbury, MA. — June 25th, 2018 — With the Detroit Grand Prix in the rear-view mirror of the Turner BMW M6 GT3, the team turns focus to round 5 of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at Watkins Glen International.
Round five on the super-fast 3.40-mile, 11-turn road course marks the third round of the Tequila Patron North American Endurance Championship in which the blue and yellow BMWs have proven successful in previous years.
This year’s driver line up will see the return of three familiar faces from round two of the endurance championship at Sebring earlier in the year. Don Yount, Dillon Machavern and Markus Palttala will team up behind the wheel of the patriotic liveried No. 96 BMW.
The same lineup managed an eleventh place finish in a very challenging Sebring 12 Hour earlier this season, remaining on the lead lap with the leaders of the GTD class.
The Southwest Funding sponsored BMW will feature a one-off patriotic theme for both Watkins Glen and Canadian Tire Motorsports Park to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday splitting the two events while still maintaining the iconic Turner look and sponsors.
Palttala will return behind the wheel of a Turner BMW at Watkins Glen for the first time since 2016, paired with Michael Marsal in the No. 97 BMW M6 GT3. In 2014 Palttala drove to victory lane with co-driver Dane Cameron, leading 169 out of 178 laps in the No. 94 BMW Z4 GTD.
“It’s been a couple years since racing at the Glen, this is definitely one of my favorite tracks on the IMSA schedule.” Said Markus Palttala. “I really enjoy coming to the states to race with Turner so looking forward to this weekend and being back in the No. 96 BMW M6 GT3 with Don and Dillon.”
Turner BMWs have led laps in each of their previous appearances in the Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen, capturing a second place in 2012 and third in 2017.
“I’m looking forward to getting back to the racetrack with Turner Motorsport,” said Don Yount. “I feel like we were just at Sebring where we had a strong weekend so with a couple more races into the season, I’m confident we will have a good weekend especially with the return of Markus (Palttala) and Dillon (Machavern) paired up in the M6 GT3.”
The WeatherTech Championship on-track action will kick off on Friday with the first GTD practice at 10:35am ET. The GTD class qualifying will be LIVE on IMSA on Saturday, June 30th at 11:35am ET and the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen will go green at 9:45am ET on Sunday July 1st to be broadcast LIVE on Fox Sports 1 as well as the Fox GO App.
