(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE)
HARD-EARNED VICTORY FOR TURNER MOTORSPORT BMW IN SAHLEN’S SIX HOURS OF THE GLEN.
Amesbury, MA — July 2nd, 2018 — The No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW M6 GT3 charged through the field in a extremely hot and grueling Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen for the team’s first win on the season start from thirteenth position.
Drivers Markus Palttala, Don Yount and Dillon Machavern dug deep to get their BMW across the line first in the fifth round of the 2018 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the third round of the Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup.
The race marks the first career WeatherTech Championship wins for both Dillon Machavern and Don Yount, adding to the team’s historic success on the 3.47-mile 12-turn course with a podium in 2017 and a win in 2014.
“Today was such an accomplishment to get this win to beat some of the best drivers in the world with up-and-coming drivers that did such a great job,” said Will Turner. “It just all came together for us with perfect pit stops, great setup on the car, taking care of tires, drivers kept the car clean and we were able to pull ahead and cross the line first.”
Yount took the green flag to complete a consistent opening stint before handing the car over to Machavern who was able to make up several positions early in the race before handing the car back over to Yount with just under two hours completed.
“We all dug deep to make this one happen,” said Don Yount. “The entire team did what they needed to do and everything fell into place. I can’t say enough about the team and their ability to give us such a good car for this race.”
With Yount’s drive time completed, Palttala and Machavern took over driving duty to finish out the remainder of the race as temperatures rose throughout the early afternoon. Both drivers found themselves in the heat of the GTD battle running between fifth and seventh.
As the No. 96 drove up through the field, Machavern was able to make a highlight pass on the No. 73 Porsche to take fifth before handing the car over to Palttala.
“The car was so well balanced allowing us to push hard and keep the Continental Tires under us,” said Machavern. “The car, the tires and my teammates did an unbelievable job in such harsh conditions, today was an amazing result.”
With Palttala behind the wheel, a strategy call was made for a short fuel stop allowing Palttala to leap- frog two positions on pit lane putting him in striking distance for a podium with just under two hours remaining.
With 50 minutes remaining in the race, the GTD leader was penalized for working on the car during a closed pit. Just after the penalty was issued, Palttala made a fantastic move to get around the second place Acura ultimately allowing the No. 96 to clinch the lead as the penalized Audi entered pit lane.
Palttala continued to push the limits of the blue and yellow BMW and the Continental Tires to hold off the hard charging GTD competition to cross the line just one second over the second place Acura.
“I was happy first of all to return with Turner and do this race because the team has always been strong here.” Said Palttala. “After practice and qualifying I was thinking we have a good car, maybe a top five. I couldn’t believe after the last top that I was sitting in third and with the penalty and pass on the Acura took first. It’s really above any expectations I think any of us had. Everyone did such perfect job.”
With the Sahlen’s Six Hour completed, the Turner Motorsport will make a quick turnaround and head north, over the border into Canada to the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park to race in just 5 days. Robby Foley and Bill Auberlen will look to make their return behind the wheel of the Turner BMW after a strong race teamed up in Detroit.
