TURNER MOTORSPORT WINS BMW M SPORTS TROPHY FOR SECOND YEAR IN A ROW
DRIVER JUSTIN ROTHBERG WINS TOP DRIVER RANKING
MUNICH (December 7, 2024) – For the second consecutive year, Turner Motorsport was honored with the BMW M Sports Trophy as the most successful privateer BMW team in sports car racing competition worldwide, while Justin Rothberg, a new addition to the Turner team and BMW this year, earned the driver ranking honors. Team owner Will Turner and drivers of the No. 29 LATICRETE BMW M4 GT3 (GT World Challenge America) Robby Foley and Justin Rothberg were in attendance to accept the awards.
The BMW M Sports Trophy Awards recognize the performance of privateer drivers and teams representing the BMW brand in various series and championships at renowned events around the world. With over 580 race starts, Turner Motorsport has exclusively raced under the BMW banner since 1998. No stranger to the top step of a podium, Turner Motorsport picked up team honors at the 2023 BMW M Sports Trophy Awards. Rothberg will join former drivers Markus Palttala (2014) and Paul Dalla Lana (2011) as the third Turner Motorsport driver to earn the top driver ranking honor.
The team accolade comes largely in part to winning the GT World Challenge America Pro-Am championship, the team’s 10th title in its 26-year history, in addition to strong performances in GT America and in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, in which the team finished second in both series.
In SRO the BMW M4 GT3, piloted by Foley and Rothberg, collected race wins at Sebring International Raceway and Road America, complimented by seven podium finishes and three poles on their way to capturing the Pro-Am title. The championship battle came down to the grueling Indianapolis 8 Hour endurance race, in which the team placed second in the Pro-Am class to win the season title by a narrow margin of three points.
In IMSA, the No. 96 BMW M4 GT3 GTD and drivers Foley and Patrick Gallagher were teased with class wins at both Long Beach and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna finishing in second place at both until Road America, where the team returned to the top step of the podium. A podium finish with Jake Walker at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for IMSA’s fourth endurance race of the season and three additional top five finishes helped secure second place team honors in the series’ GTD class Championship. Gallagher was honored with a BMW M Sports Trophy for eighth place in driver rankings at the awards.
In driver rankings, Rothberg was honored with the BMW M Sports Drivers Trophy thanks to a breakout season that included winning the GT World Challenge America Pro Am title with Foley, second place in the championship in GT America and earning Rookie of the Year in GTWC. The 22-year-old had natural talent behind the wheel of the BMW M4 GT3 and saw continuous improvement throughout the season earning race wins at VIRginia International Raceway, Road America, and two at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, plus five podiums and five pole awards in GT America.
Turner Motorsport also fielded entries in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge (GS) and IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge (GSX). In GS, Robert Megennis and Dillon Machavern had podium finishes at Watkins Glen International and Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the No. 95 BMW M4 GT4 finishing fourth in the team championship. The No. 96 BMW M4 GT4 of Foley and Francis Selldorff had two top five finishes and ended the season eighth in class.
“What a year! Not only did we set the record for the most professional races with BMW worldwide, campaigning seven BMWs across five series, but we won our 10th championship AND now this: the BMW M Sports Team and Driver Trophies,” said team owner Will Turner. “I am so proud of my team, my drivers and of course, thankful to BMW Motorsport for making this all possible with their incredible race cars. I’m excited to see what we can do in 2025 with the BMW M4 GT3 & GT4 EVOs.”
